Howard Ovens has been in emergency practice since 1982. He has been very involved in policy issues related to emergency medical services and has served on many regional, provincial and national committees. He has published and spoken nationally and internationally on issues such as ED overcrowding, mandatory reporting of gunshot wounds, the lessons of SARS, and the impact of shift work. He was been the Chief of the Department of Emergency Medicine at Sinai Health System for many years and is now the Sinai Chief Medical Strategy Officer. He holds the rank of Professor at the Dept. of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Toronto. has been the Ontario Provincial Expert Lead in EM since 2010 – in that role he co-chairs Emergency Services Advisory Committee.
